GGUSD to Begin 2019-2020 School Year with New Programs to Support Student Success

Garden Grove Unified School District’s 2019-2020 school year will begin on August 28 with new programs and opportunities to support student success. As part of GGUSD tradition, schools will roll out the red carpet and greet students with cheers, posters, high-fives, and festive photo booths to celebrate the first day of school.

“We are looking forward to welcoming students back for another great year of learning,” said Board of Education President Lan Nguyen. “Over the summer, many of our schools received air conditioning and other improvements and our teachers engaged in meaningful professional development to enhance curriculum and keep students engaged.

GGUSD is pleased to begin the 2019-2020 school year with increased opportunities for students, including:

a brand new low-cost preschool with before and after school care at the Skylark campus
more coding and robotics programs, as well as our second Code to the Future Computer Science Immersion Academy at Fitz Intermediate School
dual enrollment courses at all high schools that provide students with an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school, as well as an Early College pathway at Santiago High School
more schools with air-conditioning than ever before; school-wide air conditioning will be complete during the summer of 2020
a brand new state-of-the-art district athletic stadium at Bolsa Grande High School
an increased focus on mental health and wellness with new systems of support
an expanded School Resource Officer program with increased police resources and school safety
more parent education classes and opportunities for families to get involved

The 2019-2020 school year presents opportunities for ongoing improvements after a success-filled year in 2018-2019, including many accolades. Last year, Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove, and Pacifica high schools were named 2019 Distinguished Schools and GGUSD had more high schools on the list than any district in Orange County. Hare High School was one of 31 schools recognized as a 2019 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education (CDE). Cook Elementary was one of only two schools in the entire state of California to be named a 2019 ESEA National Distinguished School for exceptional student performance. Monroe Elementary Language Academy was honored for its outstanding Spanish dual language immersion program during the 2018 Golden Bell Awards by the California School Boards Association. GGUSD was one of only four districts in Orange County and 18 across California to receive the 2019 Best Communities for Music Education Award for outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students.
